What is the difference between the FortiGate 120G and the FortiGate 200G?

The FortiGate 200G more than doubles the 120G's threat protection throughput and adds 5GE copper ports, more sessions and more managed switches and access points.

Both are 1RU FortiGate next-generation firewalls with dual AC power supplies. The 200G is the larger unit. It carries 6 Gbps of threat protection throughput against 2.8 Gbps on the 120G and 11 million concurrent sessions against 3 million. It also adds eight 5GE RJ45 ports. Size against the threat protection figure the site needs, then choose by the port mix.

Both models add one GE RJ45 management port and one HA port. Fortinet publishes every figure as an "up to" value that varies with configuration.

What the numbers mean

Fortinet measures threat protection with firewall, IPS, application control and malware protection enabled, with logging on. That is the figure to size against when a site runs the full inspection stack. Plain firewall throughput is close on the two models, so the gap opens once inspection is on.

The 200G also manages more of the Fortinet fabric. It supports 64 FortiSwitches and 256 FortiAPs against 48 and 128 on the 120G and 25 virtual domains against 10.

Storage, power and form factor

The FortiGate 121G and 201G are the same designs with a 480 GB onboard SSD added. All four models run dual non-swappable AC power supplies in 1+1 redundancy in one rack unit. The 200G draws more power, 175 W at maximum against 40 W on the 120G.

Bundles and support

Fortinet sells both models with a FortiGuard bundle or with services a la carte. The bundles are Enterprise Protection, Unified Threat Protection, Advanced Threat Protection and SD-WAN. Every bundle includes FortiCare Premium, with 24x7x365 support and a one-hour response on critical issues.
