What sets the cost and timing of a Meraki license renewal?
The cost follows the number of devices, the license each one needs and the length of the term. The timing follows the licensing model your organization runs.
Cisco states that every current Meraki product requires valid licensing to operate. The cost of a renewal is set by the devices it covers, the license each device needs and the length of the term. The timing depends on which licensing model your Meraki organization runs. Meraki uses co-termination, per-device and subscription licensing.
Co-termination organizations
A co-term organization runs on one co-term date for its devices. Applying a renewal key extends that date by the years on the key. Meraki lists MS switch licenses in 1, 3, 5, 7 and 10 year terms, with MS130 Advanced licenses up to five years. A license is claimed into the organization through the Add licenses link in the dashboard, with its 12-digit key.
When the co-term date passes, the organization enters a 30-day grace period. Network clients see no difference during it. After it, the Meraki devices shut down until licensing is back in compliance.
Subscription organizations
A Meraki subscription renews in one of two ways, automatically or by a manual renewal. Automatic renewal must be switched on at least 30 days before the subscription expires. It extends the subscription by one year. A manual renewal can start 120 days before expiration and sets a new term from 12 to 120 months.
The subscription ID stays the same on renewal, so nothing has to be claimed again. Renewal notices appear on the Meraki dashboard up to 120 days before expiration.
When to renew
For a subscription, renew inside the 120 days before expiration. For a co-term organization, a renewal key adds its years to the co-term date whenever it is applied, so renewing early loses no time. Gatewell USA re-quotes every Meraki license it sells 90 days before the license lapses.
